Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most practical martial art to learn as it allows a smaller, weaker person to defend themselves against a bigger and stronger opponent. In addition, most fights that happen on the street end up on the ground, which is where the vast majority of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu takes place. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has a long history of proving it's dominance over other martial arts in Vale Tudo tournaments where practitioners from different martial arts would face each other without any rules to determine which martial art was superior.

When arriving, it is customary to fist bump and greet your fellow training partners and professor. When class starts, we warm up using movements that are commonly used in Jiu-Jitsu in order to not only warm the muscles, but improve the muscle memory, efficiency and control of the body while performing these movements. Typically after warmup, Professor Paulo will demonstrate a technique while explaining in detail the steps and purpose of each movement. Then, we break off into pairs and practice the technique while Professor Paulo comes around to critique and improve our form. Near the end of class everyone rolls, which is where partners spar with one another and try the techniques they have learned, only now both partners are resisting and attempting to gain a better position and possibly submission on one another. At the end of class we line up and shake hands to thank one another for the training.

There are many BJJ schools but it is certainly more rare to find a gym with someone as experienced as Professor Paulo de Tarso. This allows him to provide expert instruction with great attention to detail while also modifying techniques for student's specific goals and abilities. Paulo trains daily and has been since he began Jiu-Jitsu over 30 years ago. He studies the art, constantly evolves, and lives the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle while remaining extremely humble in the process. He, like many others claim that Jiu-Jitsu saved his life, and now, he continues to dedicate his life to Jiu-Jitsu and share his knowledge to the benefit of those lucky enough to call themselves his students.
“Jiu-Jitsu puts you completely in the moment where you must have complete focus on finding a solution to the problem. This trains the mind to build that focus, to increase your awareness, your capacity to solve problems.”
— Rickson Gracie
